TORONTO - Longo Brothers Fruit Markets, Inc. (Longo's), an Ontario, Canada-based family-run independent grocer, has taken over operations of online grocer Grocery Gateway, Inc., and plans to acquire its retail grocery business.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Albertsons, Inc. is adding 60 Salt Lake City-area ZIP codes to its online delivery territory this week, the company said yesterday. With this expansion, Albertsons' e-commerce operation now serves 11 major metropolitan areas across the U.S. -- which the company claims is the largest geographic reach of any online grocery provider.

CHICAGO - Leading Internet grocer Peapod, LLC, and Giant Food, both divisions of Ahold, yesterday announced the expansion of their online ordering and delivery service to the Baltimore area, with delivery set to begin Aug. 17.

BOULDER, Colo. - Increased direct-store expenses and softer-than-expected sales in the second quarter led to a drop in Wild Oats Markets, Inc.'s second-quarter net income, the company said in an earnings conference call yesterday morning.

WEST BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - When Albertsons announced last week it would acquire Shaw's Supermarkets in a stock purchase deal expected to take place in the next 30 to 45 days, both analysts and leaders of the labor union that represents about one-third of Shaw's work force were caught off guard, according to the Providence Journal in Rhode Island.

LARCHMONT, N.Y. - D'Agostino Supermarkets, based here, announced today that Neil Buckley has joined the company as director of general merchandise and HBC, replacing David D'Agostino, who has relinquished the position to concentrate on the company's online shopping service at DAGNYC.com.
