GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Tom Berg has been promoted to v.p. of business development at Spartan Stores here. Since coming to Spartan in May 1980, Berg, most recently director of new business development has held various positions in the general merchandise, corporate brands, and marketing departments.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Frederick Morganthall, president of Harris Teeter, joined the board of Spartan Stores, Inc., with a term expiring in 2007. Morganthall's appointment brings the current number of independent Spartan board members to seven out of a total of eight directors.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Spartan Stores here posted lower net profit and sales for the fourth quarter, which it said was due in part to the timing of Easter, which fell in fiscal 2007 this year.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- It's official: Spartan Stores here yesterday completed its acquisition of D&W Food Centers, Inc.--a fixture in the west Michigan market since 1943--and now assumes operations of 16 D&W stores in west Michigan.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- With its $45 million acquisition of retailer D&W Food Centers set to be complete later this month, Spartan Stores here is already wielding the pruning shears, with closings of four of D&W's 16 stores imminent within a few weeks.
