Spartan Spruces Up Newly Acquired D&W Stores
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Makeovers got under way over the weekend in 16 D&W Food Centers, courtesy of their new owner, Spartan Stores based here. It was the end of the road for four other D&W stores, which were permanently closed.
With Spartan's $45 million purchase of 20 D&W stores officially final today, several of its newly acquired D&W's were closed Sunday and Monday for renovations, while a handful of others will be closed until Wednesday and into Friday, to receive upgrades as Spartan assimilates the D&W Food Centers into its group of grocery stores. During the temporary closings, pharmacies in the stores will remain open, officials said.
In some instances, existing D&W units will undergo slight name changes to D&W Fresh Markets, while Spartan will convert others to its Family Fare banner. The stores will carry Spartan's private-label brands, which the wholesaler-retailer will integrate with D&W's longstanding popular brands such as house brand President's Choice products, LaBrea fresh bakery items, and Boars Head deli products.
The closing of the deal between Spartan and D&W, which was announced in December, brings some 1,300 D&W associates into the Spartan family of associates.
Spartan now operates 36 supermarkets in West Michigan under the Family Fare and D&W banners, and another 34 stores in lower northern Michigan under the Glen's Markets name.
In other news, Spartan said it has entered into full-service supply agreements with seven additional distribution customers since January 2006, which are expected to add incremental revenues of approximately $25 to $30 million annually.
Craig C. Sturken, Spartan's chairman, president and c.e.o., said, "We are very pleased to continue adding distribution customers to our existing base of business. We welcome these customers and look forward to efficiently and effectively servicing their grocery needs through our value-added distribution services and consumer centric business strategy. In addition to other value-added services, the agreements provide our customers with access to one of Michigan's premier and award-winning private-label product programs."
The latest supply agreements brings to 51 the number of stores added to Spartan's distribution base during the past 12 months, said Sturken, noting that the company also significantly expanded its distribution services a 19-store customer last November.
