Spartan Ups Berg To New Biz Development V.P.; Supports Special Olympics

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Tom Berg has been promoted to v.p. of business development at Spartan Stores here. Since coming to Spartan in May 1980, Berg, most recently director of new business development has held various positions in the general merchandise, corporate brands, and marketing departments.

In other Spartan news, the company, through its neighborhood supermarkets, is selling Special Olympics medallions through June to benefit the Summer Games in Michigan.

The medallions can be purchased for $1 at Family Fare Supermarkets and Glen's Markets throughout Michigan. Customers sign their name on the medallions, which are then displayed in the stores.

"Spartan Stores is committed to Special Olympics and raising funds for the summer games," said Craig Sturken, Spartan's chairman, president, and c.e.o. "We salute the participating athletes, families, volunteers, retail vendors, and customers who are involved with Special Olympics. Their participation and support ensures the games' success each year."

In 1985 Spartan Stores became the exclusive sponsor of the Special Olympics Michigan Summer Games. Spartan's corporate contribution to Special Olympics Michigan over the past 22 years totals over $6 million. This year's Summer Games will be held on June 1 to June 3 at Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant, Mich.

Spartan, the country's 10th-largest grocery distributor, serves more than 350 independent grocery stores in Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio. The company also owns and operates 70 retail supermarkets and 19 deep-discount food and drug stores in Michigan and Ohio, under such banners as D&W Fresh Markets, Family Fare Supermarkets, Glen's Markets, and The Pharm.
