    NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. -- A 301,626-square-foot building here being used as a distribution center by Keene, N.H.-based C&S Wholesale Grocers has been sold. In a deal for about $16.8 million, an unnamed buyer purchased the building from the Hampshire Companies, based in Morristown, N.J.
  • A&P Sells Canadian Business to Metro; Gains Equity Stake and Much More

    MONTVALE, N.J. -- In a move that has Wall Street applauding, the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., Inc. based here, said yesterday it has agreed to sell its Canadian operations to Metro, Inc., a leading Canadian supermarket and pharmaceutical operator based in Montreal. The $1.48 billion deal leaves A&P with a 15.8 percent ownership stake in Metro, two seats on Metro's board, multiple opportunities for knowledge sharing, and substantial cash proceeds that will allow A&P to focus on strengthening its retail operations in the northeastern United States.

    MONTVALE, N.J. -- As was widely expected, The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., Inc. here said yesterday that it would transfer its U.S. distribution operations, including some warehouse facilities and related assets, to C&S Wholesale Grocers.

    MONTVALE, N.J. -- The Great A&P Tea Co., based here, has revealed plans to shut down its Edison, N.J. warehouse next month, apparently as part of its plan to aggressively pare its operations.
  • C&S Unit To Buy 104 BI-LO/Bruno's Units

    GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Southern Family Markets Acquisition, LLC, an affiliate of Brattleboro, Vt.-based C&S Wholesale Grocers, Inc., has said that it would purchase 104 of the 426 stores currently owned by BI-LO, LLC, parent company of BI-LO and Bruno's, which said it would also sell an additional nine stores and close three others.

    CHICAGO -- At the 2005 FMI Show here the Food Marketing Institute has awarded the 2005 Neighborhood Partnership Awards (NPA) to five companies: Food Lion, LLC of Salisbury, N.C.; C&S Wholesale Grocers Inc. of Keene, N.H.; Ukrop's Super Markets, Inc. of Richmond, Va.; Wakefern Food Corp. of Edison, N.J.; and White Rose Food of Carteret, N.J. The annual awards, now in their ninth year, honor quality and distinction in supermarkets' community-based initiatives in the areas of youth development, hunger relief, health and wellness, and urban economic development.
