Southern Family Markets to Close 13 Stores in Southeast

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Southern Family Markets here is closing 13 stores in Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia, as the chain streamlines operations.

The company said in a statement it has decided to focus resources on its remaining 75 stores.

"This difficult decision comes at a time when we must take a closer look at every piece of our business if we wish to remain competitive," said president Bill White. "By focusing our resources on our strongest markets, Southern Family Markets will strengthen its business, enabling us to provide the very best in customer service."

The retailer said it will close Alabama stores in Clanton, Dothan, Meridianville, and Moulton. In Georgia, stores will close in Athens, Clayton, Cornelia, Dublin, East Ellijay, Greensboro, and Macon, which has two stores. One in West Point, Miss., near the Alabama line will also close.
