Southern Family Markets Store Fined for Price-scanning Errors

BIRMINGHAM, S.C. -- A store in Clemmons, N.C. operated by Southern Family Markets here, an affiliate of food distributor C&S Wholesale Grocers, Inc., was reportedly fined $1,170 in civil penalties by the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services for excessive price-scanning errors.

According to an article in The Winston-Salem Journal, the department said its inspectors found price-scanner errors during two separate inspections at the store.

During the initial inspection in February, investigators found an error rate of 7 percent based on seven overcharges from an inspection lot of 100 randomly selected items, according to the report.

A follow-up inspection in April found eight errors from 300 items, or an error rate of 2.7 percent.

Any store that has more than a 2 percent error rate on overcharges must discuss findings with the inspectors, and is then subject to a more intensive follow-up.
