C&S to Boost Procurement Proficiency With New Data Warehouse

KEENE, N.H. -- C&S Wholesale Grocers, Inc. is installing a new data warehouse solution to enhance the operations of the company's procurement and retail units.

C&S will deploy the solution, from Teradata, a division of NCR Corporation, with the assistance of Teradata partner IBM IIS/Ascential, which is providing guidance to integrate data from the wholesaler's previous information systems.

"Procurement is at the core of what we do at C&S," said Joe Caracappa, s.v.p. and c.i.o. of C&S. "Anything we can do to make the procurement process more effective helps us make better decisions that benefit our retail partners, their customers and our entire organization. Teradata has the expertise and experience we need to make a smooth, low-risk transition to their technology, and we fully expect to be showing positive results soon after the system is fully implemented."

In other news, the wholesaler received a "Not Your Typical Business Award" from the Citizens Bank and the New Hampshire Business Review. It is a monthly award recognizing exemplary New Hampshire businesses.

C&S was recognized for its generosity to charities and its treatment of workers. One example of the company's dedication to its workers is "The Stadium," an airy, light-filled communal workspace. "This room was designed with our employees in mind," explained C&S communications manager Karen Adelman. "The cubicles have been kept low for interaction. No one feels isolated here. People can really work together. And all this light just makes this a great place to be."

Self-managed teams, career-pathing, and chairman and c.e.o. Rick Cohen's accessibility are other pluses of C&S Wholesale Grocers' management style, according to the company.

C&S Wholesale Grocers, Inc. is a privately owned company with annual sales for 2006 projected to surpass $19 billion, and provides distribution services to grocery chains and independent stores, delivering to more than 4,000 locations from its distribution centers in Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, South Carolina, Alabama, California, and Hawaii.
