This month, grocers in select markets will be able to stock the Chilean Honeycrisp apple variety available from Elgin, Minn.-based Wescott Agri Products through its Honeybear Brands division. After obtaining the exclusive production and commercialization rights for Honeycrisp in Chile, Wescott spent a decade developing Southern Hemisphere orchards with its Chilean growing partner, and is now bringing the first imported Honeycrisp apples to North America. Although the inaugural year’s commercial production volumes will be limited, Wescott expects production to increase exponentially as the new orchards mature. As well as the Chilean program, Wescott grows Honeycrisp in the Midwest and Washington state. Suitable either for eating out of hand or for use in recipes, the apple offers a sweet-tart flavor and a crisp, crunchy flesh. For more information, visit http://westcottorchard.com.
