    MINNEAPOLIS -- Supervalu, Inc. here said yesterday that it has appointed new executive management team to lead the company when its acquisition of Albertson's, Inc. retail properties is completed. The acquisition, which will create the third-largest U.S. grocery retailer, is expected to wrap up next month, following special shareholder meetings May 30.

    WEST BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Shaw's President Carl Jablonski and a few executives from Shaw's corporate office here were in attendance for a ceremony late last week recognizing the Shaw's Supermarket in Ellsworth, Maine as the company's store of the year for 2005, according to a published report. The Ellsworth location beat out 209 other Shaw's stores in New England and was one of eight supermarkets honored nationwide from the over 2,400 stores owned by Albertsons.

    AMSTERDAM -- Ahold here said yesterday that its executive board has named Jose Alvarez to the position of president and c.e.o. of the Stop & Shop/Giant-Landover arena. He succeeds Marc Smith, who in February said he planned to retire. Smith will work closely with Alvarez for the next month as he transitions into his new role, the company said.
  • Shaw's Launches Initiatives

    WEST BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Shaw's Supermarkets Inc. here may be in between owners at the moment, but it is not in a holding pattern. The chain, under recently installed president Carl Jablonski, revealed last week that it will roll out a new Shop 'n' Scan wireless shopping and self-checkout system, launch a new ad campaign focusing on products and pricing, and add more Dunkin' Donuts outlets within its stores.
