Maine Market Named Shaw's Store of the Year for 2005

WEST BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Shaw's President Carl Jablonski and a few executives from Shaw's corporate office here were in attendance for a ceremony late last week recognizing the Shaw's Supermarket in Ellsworth, Maine as the company's store of the year for 2005, according to a published report. The Ellsworth location beat out 209 other Shaw's stores in New England and was one of eight supermarkets honored nationwide from the over 2,400 stores owned by Albertsons.

"We could have the same store down the street, but it's you who make this one special," Shaw's President Carl Jablonski noted during the presentation, as reported by the Bangor, Maine Daily News. In addition to the guests from headquarters, Ellsworth store employees and city officials were present at the ceremony.

A Maine store also won the retailer's Store of the Year award for 2004. That Shaw's is in Waterville. The Ellsworth store has 120 associates.

Although the Ellsworth store was judged on such factors as its sales numbers and shrink percentages, Jablonski said that one of its stellar features was its devotion to customer service.?"It's all about associates taking care of not only their customers, but their neighbors, and this store has taken customer service to another level," he noted. Shaw's employs mystery shoppers and anonymous customer comments to evaluate each store in its chain, added Jablonski.

In other Shaw's news, Beverly, Mass.-based ATM distributor and processor United Cash Solutions, Inc. has acquired Providence, R.I.-based ATM Advantage 2000, LLC's ATM-related assets, including those related to a long-term ATM license agreement with the Albertsons division.

"Acquiring the Shaw's relationship will reinforce our national presence and solidify our regional position as the ATM provider in the Northeast," United Cash president Alan Forgione noted in a statement.

Financial details of the deal, facilitated by Boston-based Tremont Capital Group Inc., weren't disclosed.
