  • Wal-Mart, SunEdison to Launch Solar Energy Project in Puerto Rico

    Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. and Beltsville, Md.-based solar energy services provider SunEdison have teamed up to launch rooftop solar systems at five Walmart Puerto Rico locations over the next five years.

    Publix Supermarkets Inc. has purchased 119 acres of industrial land in the Orlando, Fla., area, for $13.5 million, with the intention of building a massive new warehouse and distribution center, according to a published report.

  • Walmart Canada Debuting ‘Supercentres’ in Saskatchewan

    Walmart Canada said yesterday it would open two Walmart Supercenters (or Supercentres, as they’re known in Canada) in Saskatchewan in early 2010. These will be the province’s first Walmart stores to employ the format, as well as the company’s first venture into the fresh grocery business in Saskatchewan. The new stores will take the place of existing Walmarts in Saskatoon and Regina will be replaced by new Supercenters.
  • Del. ShopRite Boasts First LEED-Certified Supermarket Design in State

    A ShopRite store slated to open in spring 2011 on U.S. Route 40 at School Bell Crossing in Bear, Del., will employ a LEED-certified design -- a first for a grocery store in that state, according to the Kenny Family ShopRites of Delaware, which will operate the location.

    Dale C. Henley, president and CEO of Bellingham, Wash.-based independent Haggen, Inc., plans to retire from the company by June 2010 or earlier if a replacement is found beforehand.
