Walmart Canada Debuting ‘Supercentres’ in Saskatchewan
Walmart Canada said yesterday it would open two Walmart Supercenters (or Supercentres, as they’re known in Canada) in Saskatchewan in early 2010. These will be the province’s first Walmart stores to employ the format, as well as the company’s first venture into the fresh grocery business in Saskatchewan. The new stores will take the place of existing Walmarts in Saskatoon and Regina will be replaced by new Supercenters.
“Since 1994, when Walmart first transformed nine Saskatchewan Woolco stores, we have invested hundreds of millions of dollars and hired thousands of people to grow and improve our service to Saskatchewans,” noted Jim Thompson, Walmart Canada’s SVP of operations and merchandise. “Now, with a favorable provincial economy and the expectations of customers growing, we think it’s the right time to take our investment and our business to the next level. Regina and Saskatoon are a first step. We expect to make future investments and improvements province-wide.”
Both of the new stores will be about 30 percent larger than those they replace, growing from approximately 145,000 square feet to 185,000 square feet.
Mississauga, Ontario-based Walmart Canada operates 58 Supercentres in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia, having first brought the format to the country in late 2006.
