Winn-Dixie Urges Shoppers to Celebrate Family Day

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Winn-Dixie is the latest retailer to join forces with the Food Marketing Institute (FMI) and the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University to encourage customers to pledge their participation in "Family Day - A Day to Eat Dinner with Your Children" on Sept. 25.

"Through our partnership with FMI and CASA, Winn-Dixie is encouraging our customers and associates to pledge their families' participation in Family Day," said Terry Derreberry, Winn-Dixie's director of neighborhood marketing, in a statement. "Family Day is a great start to making quality time with our families a habit despite our hectic work, school, and activity schedules that so often take priority."

CASA's research has shown that the more often children eat dinner with their families, the less likely they are to smoke, drink, or use illegal drugs. Family Day helps remind busy families of the invaluable role that parental involvement plays in steering children and teens away from risky behavior. The event is a growing national effort to prevent substance abuse in kids and teens by encouraging parental engagement and increased parent-child communication through the act of having dinner together frequently. It was launched by CASA in 2001.
