Wegmans Introduces Scan-and-Bag App
The East Ave. Wegmans, in Rochester, N.Y., is the first of the grocer's stores to offer Wegmans SCAN, a free mobile app allowing customers to scan and bag groceries as they shop

After a successful employee pilot, customers at the East Ave. Wegmans, in the grocer’s hometown of Rochester, N.Y., are able to use Wegmans SCAN, a free mobile app that enables them to scan and bag their groceries as they shop. Once they’ve made their selections, customers can then quickly and easily pay for their items via self-checkout.

“As technology has evolved to enable more self-service, our customers are increasingly looking for options that save time and give them the ability to shop how they want,” noted Jack DePeters, Wegmans’ SVP of store operations. “Regardless of how customers choose to shop with us, we’ll continue delivering the same level of incredible service that customers have come to expect. For more than 100 years it’s been the cornerstone of our business, and as we evolve in the digital age, that’s where it will stay.”

The app is available for download for both iOS and Android devices. To use it, customers must be connected to the East Ave. store’s WiFi and link the app to their Shoppers Club account. Once connected, customers can start scanning their items as they shop, with Shoppers Club discounts and clipped digital coupons automatically applied to their order. Customers can also view a running total for their order as they shop.

“In market areas where similar technology is already available, customers have been asking us to offer it in our stores,” said DePeters. “Mobile-scan technology has been on our radar, but we know success only comes when the right technology is introduced at the right time, and that’s what we have with Wegmans SCAN.”

If the app is a hit with shoppers, Wegmans plans to expand it beyond the single East Ave. store through a phased rollout to additional locations.

Family-owned Wegmans operates 99 with stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland and Massachusetts. The company is No. 14 on Progressive Grocer’s 2018 Super 50 list of the top grocers in the United States.
