Wegmans Improves Checkout Process

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Wegmans Food Markets here has reprogrammed its cash registers so that shoppers won't have to sign for any credit card transactions of $25 or less. The change is expected to speed checkout time on these types of transactions by about 12 seconds, resulting in less time in line for shoppers and more efficient front ends.

Wegmans s.v.p. of consumer affairs, Mary Ellen Burris spoke about the change in her column on the retailer's Web site.

In her column, Burris urged shoppers to consider switching to electronic checks instead of continuing to write out checks. Wegmans offers an electronic checking option on its Shoppers Club Card, and interested customers can find out more at the service desk in any of the chain's stores.

"It's all about continuous improvement, so we can provide incredible service to you," noted Burris.

Despite the new policy, she said, Shoppers Club for Business (SCB) customers will still be required to sign for all purchases, since SCB customers are organizations that have multiple people using their card, and the names of the purchasers helps them track their purchases. Additionally, anyone paying with a credit card in our Wegmans video departments will have to sign, as those departments have a separate payment system from that of the front end.
