Vidalia Onions, Wegmans Give $1,000 Gas Card to Needy Family
:Although Eben Kennedy, a category merchant in Wegmans Food Markets' produce department, won a $1,000 gas card courtesy of the Vidalia Onion Committee (VOC), the lucky winner will not use it for himself, but instead is donating it to a family that needed it more.
Instead, Kennedy and VOC donated the thousand-dollar gas card to a special family through Wegmans' Employee Assistance Program (EAP), which helps support employees going through difficult times as they deal with any number of life issues.
"It's about doing the right thing at the right time and having the opportunity to do so," said Kennedy, who won the Original Sweet Onion Trivia Contest at the Produce Marketing Association (PMA) Fresh Summit 2008 in Orlando, Fla. Attendees dropped by the VOC's booth to test their sweet onion knowledge for prizes and a chance to win a $1,000 gas card.
"The trivia contest in itself was a thrill," said Wendy Brannen, VOC executive director, adding how much she and her staff "enjoyed interacting with Fresh Summit attendees and learning what they did or didn't know about our onions."
Thanks to Kennedy, Brannen said the opportunity to help a family in need-that was "an added bonus, especially during the holiday season, when we all are a little more aware of what we have to be thankful for."
