Union Workers Join Counterparts in 8 Cities to Air Gripes Over Health Care Plans
HOUSTON -- Members of the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 455 said they're joining with fellow workers in eight cities across the country at store events to voice their concerns on health care in the industry.
The press conferences, slated to begin today, are part of a growing national unity bargaining movement among UFCW members working in the grocery industry.
According to Local 455, contracts covering some 12,000 grocery workers in Houston expired March 31, and while Local 455 members are currently in negotiations with Kroger, what's happening in these negotiations will likely affect Houston's negotiations.
The union claimed that supermarket chains nationwide are refusing to provide affordable health care and living wages.
