Shoppers Food & Pharmacy Names Two S.V.P., Promotes Four Execs
LANHAM, Md. -- Shoppers Food & Pharmacy has created two new s.v.p. positions, in addition to promoting four other company executives.
The chain named Doug Sorenson s.v.p. of operations and human resources; and Rick Rodger s.v.p. of corporate alternative formats, in which capacity will oversee the creation and execution of new grocery formats such as the recently launched El Primero Mercado.
Sorenson previously served as v.p. of store operations and human resources at Pittsburgh-based Shop 'n Save, a Supervalu-owned grocery retailer like Shoppers. In that position Sorenson was responsible for store operations, human resources, risk management, maintenance, information technology, and loss prevention.
Sorenson started his career in the grocery industry with H.E. Butt Grocery Co. in 1980, where he worked his way up to unit director. After joining Ahold in 1990 as district manager of Red Food Stores, he served in various capacities, including director of human resources for BiLo Food Stores, director of operations support for BiLo, director of store development for Red Food, and director of strategic initiatives for BiLo, and v.p. of human resources and business transformation from 1999 to 2004. He joined Supervalu in 2005.
Rodgers last held the position of s.v.p. of merchandising. As s.v.p. of corporate alternative formats, he will guide the operations of the El Primero Mercado format, as well as investigate the potential of bringing other innovative formats to the mid-Atlantic region served by Shoppers.
Rodgers started out in the grocery business as a produce field merchandiser for Basic Foods Warehouse in 1986. In 1989, he moved to Baltimore's Farm Fresh as director, produce procurement. In 1991, Rodgers joined Basic/Metro Food Markets, where he served as store director, v.p. of grocery, and s.v.p. of marketing and procurement. After Shoppers acquired Basic/Metro in 2000, Rodgers held such positions as v.p. of grocery and s.v.p. of merchandising, in which position he played a crucial role in the development and opening of the first El Primero Mercado store, which debuted in December 2005.
Both Sorenson and Rodgers report to president Dick Bergman.
The additional promotions are:
