Shoppers Food & Pharmacy Hires New S.V.P.

MINNEAPOLIS - Shoppers Food & Pharmacy, a 59-store grocery retail chain owned by Supervalu, Inc., said yesterday that it has named Ernie Smith s.v.p., giving him leadership and strategic development roles central to the chain's expansion plans.

Smith, who has nearly 30 years of grocery industry experience, joins Shoppers after holding an independent industry management consulting role since 2001. Before that, he was c.f.o. of Ahold USA and earlier served as an e.v.p. with Giant Food Stores, Inc. In addition, Smith is a member of the Executive Leadership Doctoral Program at George Washington University, and serves as a board member for several for-profit and nonprofit organizations.

"Ernie brings with him a wealth of grocery industry and leadership knowledge," said Shoppers Food & Pharmacy president Bill White in a statement. "We look forward to his guidance as we continue to grow."

With annual revenues exceeding $20 billion, Supervalu holds leading market share positions with its more than 1,500 retail grocery locations, including licensed Save-A-Lot locations. Also, through Supervalu's diverse logistics network, the company provides distribution and related logistics support services across the nation's grocery channel.
