Publix Hispanic Units Expected to Open in May

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Publix Super Markets here said yesterday it is converting two of its Florida stores to a Hispanic-themed supermarket format called Publix Sabor (sabor is Spanish for "taste"), and the units are expected to open in May.

The new format is designed to reach Hispanic customers in Florida's Central and South Florida regions. The stores, located on 1980 East Osceola Parkway in Kissimmee and 1585 W. 49th St. in Hialeah, will feature expanded offerings in the Hispanic food and grocery categories and will be staffed with bilingual associates.

"Publix Sabor was designed to meet the needs of our customers in particular neighborhoods throughout the Central and South Florida regions," said director of media and community relations Maria Brous. "This store prototype will provide Publix with many opportunities to refine how we reach our Hispanic customers and serve as an important model in the years ahead."

Privately-owned Publix currently operates 850 stores in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, and Tennessee.
