Price Chopper Plans Skin Cancer Prevention Message

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Just in time for the Memorial Day weekend and the official kickoff of summer, Price Chopper Supermarkets here is joining forces with the American Cancer Society to hold an educational press conference about the perils of sun exposure and recommended safety precautions at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 26 in the pharmacy department of the Price Chopper store in Colonie, N.Y.

In revealing its participation in the press conference during Skin Care Prevention and Detection Month, the Northeast regional retailer stressed that everyone is at risk for skin cancer, regardless of skin color. According to the American Cancer Society, over 1 million Americans are diagnosed each year with skin cancer, the most common form of cancer, and 55,000 of those people will be diagnosed with melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer. Additionally, the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays are believed to increase skin cancer risk and cause premature aging of the skin.

As part of its initiative against the disease, Price Chopper is offering free skin cancer prevention leaflets to consumers via the retailer's in-store sunscreen displays. The company also plans to distribute the pamphlets, as well as free samples of Coppertone products, at various summer events throughout the grocer's operating region.

Those participating in the press conference include Maureen Murphy, Price Chopper's manager of consumer services; Dr. Judith Mysliborski, dermatologist for Capital District Dermatology Associates in Albany, N.Y.; Karen Carpenter-Palumbo, regional v.p. of the American Cancer Society; and Kathleen Bryant, Price Chopper's director of pharmacy.

The family-owned Golub Corp. owns and operates over 100 Price Chopper grocery stores in New York, Vermont, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. Golub employs more than 23,000 associates, who collectively own 55 percent of the company's privately held stock.

In other cancer awareness initiatives, the New York Apple Association, based in Fishers, N.Y., this week presented the American Cancer Society with a check for $25,000 for "Coaches vs. Cancer," a fundraising program for the American Cancer Society headed by Syracuse Basketball coach Jim Boeheim.

Apple growers and local supermarkets collaborated this spring to contribute the money to promote healthy eating and publicize the cancer-fighting aspects of fresh apples. A Cornell University research has found that apples can prevent breast cancer, and that the chemicals in apple skin help fight liver and colon cancer.

Participating local retailers, including Jubilee, Sure Fine Markets, Foodlands, IGA, Farm Fresh Foods, Tops Markets, P&C, ALDI, Wegmans, Big M's, Nice N Easy, Giant Food Markets, and Price Chopper, put promotional posters beside McIntosh, Empire, and other displays of New York apple varieties. The displays urged shoppers to buy New York apples and help fight cancer through healthier eating and supporting cancer research.

Since 2000, the New York Apple Association has raised over $100,000 for the American Cancer Society and local cancer research programs. The apple growers' efforts have included selling apples and applesauce at the New York State Fair and donating proceeds from apple sales at grocery stores.
