PMA Recognized for Consumer Food Safety Awareness
NEWARK, Del. -- The Produce Marketing Association (PMA) here was recently named to the 2006 Associations Advance America Honor Roll, for its Safe Produce Handling campaign.
PMA's program received the national award, sponsored by the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE), for educating consumers about safe handling of fresh produce. The program is funded by PMA through the Partnership for Food Safety Education, a public-private initiative to educate consumers about safe food handling.
The campaign produced several messaging tools, available primarily on the Web in English and Spanish, for consumers and key consumer influencers. The Safe Produce Handling campaign has reached millions of consumers nationally in promoting safe produce handling messages to improve America's health.
"Food safety throughout the distribution chain is one of our members' top priorities," said PMA v.p. of government relations Kathy Means. "Funding this campaign is an effective way for us to address the last link in that chain -- consumers. We encourage the industry to use these free tools to further distribute these messages to consumers."
The Safe Produce Handling program is a key component for the Partnership for Food Safety Education's national FightBAC! campaign against bacteria and other food hazards. FightBAC! is designed to address and lower foodborne illness, which cause 76 million illnesses and 5,000 deaths annually.
