More Metal Found in Food in Pennsylvania
LOWER SAUCON TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- In the sixth apparent instance of metal objects discovered in foods bought in local supermarkets here, a man told police that he found a pellet resembling buckshot in ground beef from Lexington, Ky. Laura's Lean Beef, which he said he had bought at a local Giant Food store.
The discovery was allegedly made last week, but the purchaser said he only came forward after becoming aware of earlier media reports of similar discoveries.
Giant-Carlisle spokesman Denny Hopkins told Progressive Grocer that the retailer pulled what was in the meat case the day the report was made, replacing it with fresh product. The company also contacted Laura's Lean Beef. Hopkins added that it was his understanding that the police were not treating the incident as a tampering case.
The other cases, which all involve pins or needles discovered in items purchased at area Giant and Weis Markets-owned King's Supermarkets stores, are currently under investigation by local police and representatives of the U.S. FDA.
