Mollie Stone's Dumps Tobacco
SAN FRANCISCO - Community-based independent Mollie Stone's Markets last week removed all tobacco products from the shelves of its eight Bay Area supermarkets.
"We have thought long and hard about making choices for our customers, but we have decided to take an aggressive, positive approach to help stop the spread of smoking by deciding not to offer for sale any tobacco products in our supermarkets," says David Bennett, co-owner of Mollie Stone's Markets.
Representatives from Mollie Stone's and the American Heart Association were on hand to make the official announcement of the company's decision, and to begin removing tobacco products from the shelves at the Pacific Heights, San Mateo, and Greenbrae locations.
"The American Heart Association applauds Mollie Stone's for taking this step and hopes others will follow suit," said Pat MaGee, American Heart Association spokesperson. "Smoking is a major cause of cardiovascular diseases, including coronary heart disease and stroke. It is the most important modifiable risk factor for chronic heart disease."
Mollie Stone's began in the natural and organic food business in 1986, and carries organic and conventional groceries, dairy, deli and frozen food; natural and conventional beef, and conventional and organic produce.
Mollie Stone's operates eight supermarkets in the San Francisco Bay Area, including: Sausalito, Greenbrae, San Francisco (Pacific Heights and Tower Market), Palo Alto, Burlingame, San Mateo, and San Bruno.
