Minyards to Convert 11 Stores to Hispanic Carnival Brand

COPPELL, Texas -- Minyard Food Stores, Inc. here will begin converting 11 Minyard and Sack'n Save stores to its Hispanic-centric Carnival format this fall, the company said this week.

"Geo-demographically, it makes sense to convert more of our stores to the Carnival format," Poul Heilmann, s.v.p. of strategy and marketing at the 68-unit regional chain, told Progressive Grocer. "The demographics in [the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex] are shifting significantly toward Hispanics. Some of the neighborhoods we had been in have changed over time. We want to ensure we're satisfying the needs of our customers in these trade areas."

The company would not provide details about which stores would be converted. The conversions will put Carnival's store count at 35, eclipsing the Minyard banner, which currently includes 24 stores; and Sack'n Save, which has 19 stores.

Heilmann said the chain is continuously working on the Carnival format to ensure it best serves its shoppers. "We're adapting on a number of fronts, in areas such as new products and new sets. We'll be testing and adapting these over time."

The Minyard family sold the 73-year-old company to Texas investment firm Acquisition Vehicle Texas II, LLC, last October.
