Martin's Super Food Store to Hold Official Opening This Week

CARLISLE, Pa. -- A 65,000-square-foot Martin's Super Food Store will hold its official grand opening in Derby, N.Y. on Wednesday, Dec. 7. The store has been open to local shoppers since early October, but all of the new amenities, among them an expanded parking lot and the addition of fuel pumps, have now been completed.

The demolition of an old Tops Market at the location resulted in the creation of 130 parking spaces in front of the new Martin's store, for a total of approximately 450 spaces, according to the company, and eight fuel pumps have been installed, each containing a Pay-at-the-Pump feature. A range of automotive and convenience items, along with free air, gas mitts to keep hands clean, and waterless hand soap, is also available. Both Martin's and Tops are trade names of Giant Food Stores, LLC, one of four retail operating companies under Ahold USA.

"Our customers have been very receptive to the expanded selection of items and the increased emphasis on technology and convenience since Martin's opened its doors this past October," said store manager Michael Nugent in a statement. "With the project now officially completed, I hope customers will find the addition of more parking spaces and fuel pumps another way Martin's is committed to providing its customers a more convenient shopping experience."

In other Giant Food news, Tops Markets has ended the exclusive relationship it had with ClubMom in the banner's markets. ClubMom is aimed at mothers who shop to gain points through grocery purchases. These points can be used to buy such things as spa visits or movie tickets.

According to a published report, Tops says it will provide other benefits for customers. Martin's/Tops spokesman Denny Hopkins told Progressive Grocer that the decision not to renew the contract with ClubMom after "a lot of analysis and consideration." The retailer decided to take the dollars previously invested in the program and use them elsewhere, added Hopkins, who noted that several new programs, whose content he declined to discuss, were currently under development for an early 2006 launch. The move wasn't meant as a criticism of ClubMom, which he described as an "excellent" partner.

Hopkins noted that Tops sent letters to its customers about the discontinuation of the program, with a survey attached, as a way of gauging shopper reaction. About 2,000 responses have been received so far, he said, with a clear majority not anticipating any "major problems" from the end of the Tops/ClubMom relationship.

ClubMom.com, founded by Meredith Vieira, moderator of the daytime talk show "The View," actor/social activist Andrew Shue, among others, is a Web site where mothers can go for practical advice, tips, and personal stories from other moms. The site currently has over 2 million members.

Giant Food Stores currently operates 103 stores as Giant Food Stores, 145 stores as Tops Markets, and 23 stores as Martin's Food Markets. With nearly 37,000 associates Giant serves a six-state market area.
