Marsh Converting Some Stores, Removing Floral, Meat Service in Others
INDIANAPOLIS -- Seven months after buying Marsh Supermarkets based here for $88 million and assumed debt, Sun Capital Partners, the chain's new owners, are fine-tuning the merchandising mix in a bid to become more efficient.
In addition to resurrecting the Marsh nameplate to two LoBill discount stores in Cincinnati, the management has cut services at some Marsh stores, eliminating full-service meat counters in Shelbyville and Bloomington and the full-service floral shop in Shelbyville.
The moves were "benefits to the stores" because they reduced the stores' overhead, Connie Gardner, Marsh spokeswoman was quoted as saying in local press reports.
Gardner further said the supermarket chain continues to evaluate other stores for possible changes, and is freshening up or remodeling all stores in its companywide portfolio.
The chain operates 69 Marsh supermarkets, 29 LoBill Foods stores, six O'Malia Food markets and 158 Village Pantry convenience stores in Indiana and western Ohio.
