Ken Capano Elected to Wakefern Board

Wakefern Food Corp., the marketing and distribution arm of ShopRite supermarkets said it named Ken Capano, president and owner of Five Star Supermarkets, Inc., to its 22-member board of directors this past August.

“Ken’s dedication to Wakefern and to the community he serves has not only been recognized by us, but also by our industry,” said Joe Colalillo, chairman and c.e.o. at Wakefern. “Recently, Ken was recognized by the Connecticut Food Association when he received their 2008 Man of the Year award. I welcome Ken to the board and look forward to tapping into his insight and vision as we move the cooperative forward.”

Capano’s affiliation with Wakefern spans more than three decades, starting in 1972 when he joined Wakefern as a store services supervisor. He became a Wakefern member in 1996 when he purchased the ShopRite of Norwich, which along with ShopRite of New London are run by Five Star.

He also received the Eastern Connecticut Citizen of the Year award in 2006 from the Chamber of Commerce.

Retailer-owned cooperative Wakefern is comprised of 44 members who individually own and operate supermarkets under the ShopRite banner. Wakefern is the merchandising and distribution arm of the company, and serves more than 200 ShopRite stores located throughout New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Delaware.
