Hostess Launches Line of Hispanic Snack Cakes

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Hostess, a brand of Interstate Bakeries Corp. here, has introduced Las Delicias de Hostess, a new line of Hispanic snack cakes, in grocery stores, supermarkets, and convenience stores this month in San Diego, Dallas, and Phoenix.

The launch is being supported by an advertising campaign publicizing the expansion of the Hostess family of products, the company said.

Reflecting the culinary tastes of Latinos, the line consists of 10 items:

--Mini Pastelitos de Piña, pineapple and coconut-covered cake with creamy filling
--Mini Pastelitos de Fresa, strawberry and coconut-covered cake with creamy filling
--Mini Pastelitos de Coco, chocolate-iced coconut cake with creamy filling
--Panqué con Nueces, mini pound cakes with pecans
--Panqué con Pasas, mini pound cake with raisins
--Panqué, plain mini pound cakes
--Cupcakes de Fresa, white cake with strawberry filling
--Cupcakes de Piña, white cake with pineapple filling
--Cupcakes de Dulce de Leche, white cake with dulce de leche filling
--Concha, a soft, chewy yeast roll with a sugary topping

Television commercials and other advertising created by Costa Mesa, Calif.-based Casanova Pendrill, which specializes in reaching Hispanic consumers, will initially run in Spanish-language media outlets in the San Diego, Dallas, and Phoenix markets through November 2005. The new products also will be featured at a variety of upcoming community events in those markets.

Kaul told Progressive Grocer that a national rollout of the products is expected next year, and that the company's expectations for the line go beyond the Latino market: "Ethnic foods and flavors are growing in popularity with all consumers, and IBC believes that the product will appeal to non-Hispanic consumers, as well."

According to Kaul, however, the company has not yet determined whether Las Delicias de Hostess ads will run in English.
