Former Supermarket Worker Makes Film at Old Store
ELLINGTON, Conn. -- The Ellington Supermarket here may have recently closed, but it's been captured for posterity on the silver screen, thanks to onetime employee Timothy Norman, a film student at Boston's Emerson College, who has written and directed "The Supermarket," an independent comedy-drama about a group of friends who work at the title business.
The film depicts a small-town supermarket about to close because of the opening of a big chain store. In real life, Ellington Supermarket, which served the community for almost 20 years, shuttered in July in anticipation of a new Big Y supermarket that opened nearby a month later.
Norman told regional newspaper the Journal Inquirer that the movie was based in part by the circumstances of Ellington Supermarket's closure, as well as other cases of chain retailers driving smaller operators out of business.
Nearly everyone who worked on the film went to the local high school or worked at the store, he added.
Norman is in the midst of editing the feature-length movie, which was shot on location last summer and should show up at screenings and film festivals next May.
The trailer of "The Supermarket" can be seen on the popular Myspace Web site.
