FMI Opposes Card Check Bill
ARLINGTON, Va. -- The Food Marketing Institute here is sending out a Key Vote card to every member of the U.S. House of Representatives this week, in an effort to stop passage of the "Employee Free Choice Act," also known as the card check bill (H.R. 800).
The House is scheduled to vote this week on H.R. 800, which, according to FMI, "would deny our associates the democratic right to a federally supervised secret ballot election on whether they want union representation."
This right to a secret ballot has been in place for some 70 years, and it ensures workers will have a fair election, free of fraudulent interference, coercion, and intimidation from employers as well as unions, FMI argued.
FMI said it is opposing the measure as a leader of the 26-member Coalition for a Democratic Workplace.
A recent poll conducted by McLaughlin & Associates, cited by FMI, suggested that Americans overwhelmingly do not want to replace the secret ballot election system with a public card-check process.
