First UltraPure Milk Line Rolled Out by NYC's Largest Milk Supplier
JAMAICA, N.Y. -- Mountainside Farms here, an affiliate of Elmhurst Dairy, Inc., New York City's biggest milk supplier, is now offering Mountainside Farms UltraPure milk in Whole, 2% Reduced Fat, 1% Lowfat, and Fat Free varieties at select grocery stores such as Gristede's, Food Emporium, A&P, Foodtown, D'Agostino, and Associated Supermarkets in New York and New Jersey.
Combining environmentally friendly business practices with the use of innovative UltraPure technology during processing, Mountainside Farms says it can "produce purer, better-tasting milk that is free of hormones and antibiotics, with improved shelf life." The milk has a retail price of about $2.49 per half-gallon.
According to Cyrus Schwartz, president of Mountainside Farms and fifth-generation member of the Schwartz family who founded Elmhurst: "Our customers have been telling us that they want access to many of the qualities that organic milk provides, but didn't want to pay the $4 to $5 charge per half-gallon. UltraPure gives them many of the same health benefits at a cost that's closer to that of conventional milk."
The milk is produced at Mountainside Farms' Roxbury, N.Y. facility in the Catskill Mountains near the headwaters of the Delaware River, an area that provides much of New York City's drinking water. All Mountainside Farms UltraPure milk comes from about 120 individual family farms throughout upstate New York. As part of that community, Mountainside Farms maintains stricter environmental standards than any other milk plant in the United States.
Mountainside Farms tests all of its milk for the presence of the six antibiotics most commonly used on dairy cows, surpassing the mandatory testing required by state and federal regulations by 20 percent. Additionally, the producer requires certifications from all of its dairy farmers to ensure that no growth hormones are used. Mountainside Farms also uses unique bacterial centrifuge and filtration equipment that allows the company to remove 90 percent to 95 percent of the bacteria typically present in milk before pasteurization. The result of this process is a product that the company has trademarked under the name UltraPure.
While an unopened container of conventional milk has a refrigerator shelf life of eight to 10 days, Mountainside Farms UltraPure milk offers a shelf life of 16 to 17 days.
The milk will keep rolling out to select supermarkets in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut during summer and fall 2006.
