D'Agostino to Hold Second Annual Best Bagger Contest
D'Agostino Supermarkets is gearing up for its second annual NYC Best Bagger Championship, the only New York City event in the yearlong, nationwide program in which the best grocery baggers in the United States vie for prizes and the mantle of America's Best Bagger. The citywide finals will be held Oct. 7 at the D'Agostino at 10th Ave. between 54th and 55th Streets in Manhattan, featuring the finalists from each of the chain's 18 stores.
Finalists from each store will be selected at store competitions taking place Sept. 25. The winner from each store will receive $100 D'AG Gift Certificates and 5,000 S&H Green Points, redeemable at any D'Agostino store or at the Green Points Web site, respectively.
Contestants are judged on speed, bag-building technique, weight distribution between bags, style, attitude, and appearance.
"Excellence in bagging represents an important element in providing outstanding customer service in an area in which independent community-focused retailers excel -- and, of course, New Yorkers like it when they can get in and out of the supermarket quickly and efficiently," noted D'Agostino Supermarkets president and c.o.o. Nicholas D'Agostino III.
At the finals, as at the individual-store competitions, there will be two lanes set up for two baggers to go head-to-head, and two heats for each store winner: paper first, and then plastic.
The list of items being bagged is the same as that at the individual store competitions: bagged salads, chips, soap and soap powder, salad dressing, cookies, glass bottled spaghetti sauce, canned soup, a wrapped deli sandwich, a frozen dinner, bread, oranges, light bulbs, a tissue box and several of the items from D'Agostino's private label value line, Smart Price.
The overall New York City winner chosen on Oct. 7 will receive a $250 gift certificate, additional Green Points, and a trip to compete in the state finals, to be held in November at the Price Chopper store in Newburgh, N.Y. The statewide winner then travels to the national finals in Las Vegas, in February 2009.
Last news, in honor of the 75th Anniversary of D'Agostino Supermarkets, the grocer launched its first bagger contest.
