Big Y Appoints First V.P. of Legal Affairs and Gov't Relations

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Big Y Foods, Inc. here said yesterday that it has named Michael S. Gold to the new position of v.p. of legal affairs and government relations. Gold will report to president and c.o.o. Charles D'Amour.

In his new role, Gold will serve as Big Y's general counsel, and will provide advice on all of the company's legal matters, including regulatory and compliance issues. He will also handle government affairs, representing Big Y on various state and national industry organizations. Finally, he will be responsible for the grocer's risk management and food safety departments.

A lawyer of over 20 years' standing, Gold has extensive experience in the food industry. Gold was v.p. and general counsel at Merkert American, Inc. (later Marketing Specialists), the first publicly traded U.S. food brokerage company. Additionally, he served for five years as v.p. and general counsel for Shaw's Supermarkets, Inc. until its 2004 purchase by Albertsons.

Gold's most recent position was as a principal in The Danali Group, a consulting firm that offered general counsel services, human resources management, and legal and administrative process advice to several types of businesses.

Gold is the grandson of Irving Feinstein, owner of the former Springfield-based Grower's Outlets and Jumbo Supermarket chains, which Big Y acquired in 1968.

Family-owned and -operated Big Y, one of the largest independently owned supermarket chains in New England, operates 56 stores in Connecticut and Massachusetts, and employs over 9,200 associates.
