Ben & Jerry’s Joins Food Fight

In response to a lawsuit filed by the Grocery Manufacturers Association and other industry groups to overturn Vermont’s first-in-the-nation GMO labeling law as unconstitutional, Green Mountain State ice cream maker Ben & Jerry’s has unveiled Food Fight Fudge Brownie, an honorary renaming of its popular Chocolate Fudge Brownie flavor, to help fund the state’s legal defense.

"This is a pretty simple issue," noted Ben & Jerry's co-founder Jerry Greenfield as he introduced the renamed flavor in the presence of Gov. Peter Shumlin, members of the Vermont Right to Know Coalition and passersby. "Vermonters want the right to know what's in their food, and apparently a bunch of out-of-state companies don't want to tell us."

Greenfield said that a portion from each sale of Food Fight Fudge Brownie through July in its company-owned Vermont stores would go to support the fund. "We're used to putting dough in ice cream, but renaming Chocolate Fudge Brownie to Food Fight Fudge Brownie will help put some dough in the Food Fight Fund," he added.

Burlington-based Ben & Jerry's, a wholly owned subsidiary of Unilever, also encouraged consumers to make contributions to the fund on their own.
