BETHESDA, Md.-- Balducci's here next week is launching a five-month partnership with Italian Lifestyle magazine Bene, offering the first in a series of free Italian cooking demonstrations at the gourmet retailer's landmark store in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan.

The first demo will feature Johanne Killeen and George Germon, owners/chefs of Providence, R.I. restaurant Al Forno and authors of the cookbook "On Top of Spaghetti," on Wednesday, Jan. 17 at 6:30 pm. Attendees will be able to buy copies of the cookbook on the evening of the event. The cooking class will last an hour, and Balducci's cautions that space is limited.

Demonstrations over the next few months will be hosted by such chefs as David Poran, Balducci's culinary director, on Feb. 15, and Manuel and Mike Greco, of New York's Il Mulino Restaurant, on March 15.

The series will culminate in Bene's New York Toasts Italy event on Saturday May 19th, New York's first-ever citywide celebration of Italian style. Ticket holders will receive special discounts and gifts on Italian designer clothing, jewelry, and home furnishings; sample Italian wines and food; and eat with noted chefs and food personalities at top Italian restaurants. Balducci's will be a featured destination during the daylong event.

Bene, launched last year, is the only U.S. magazine completely dedicated to all things Italian. Balducci's Food Lover's Market currently operates 10 stores and four restaurants.
