A&P Opens Food Basics Store in Glassboro, N.J.

MONTVALE, N.J. -- A&P here has opened a new Food Basics store in Glassboro, N.J., representing its latest incarnation of a format "where economy comes with quality, freshness, and convenience that redefine discount food shopping," in the words of a company statement.

"We're committed to the idea that a store offering discount prices day in and day out doesn't have to be a penalty box for shoppers, and Food Basics is proof of that," noted Paul Wiseman, s.v.p. of store operations for A&P. "Our customers love the fact that they're saving as much as 25 percent on their weekly food shop compared to other food stores. But they're also surprised and delighted by what we're offering in produce, meat, and other fresh food departments, and by the shopping atmosphere -- and that's something you don't usually hear in a discount environment."

The store offers about 7,000 grocery and other packaged goods items bearing national brand names and the A&P's America's Choice. Food Basics also features fresh food departments, among them complete produce, meat, dairy, and frozen food sections that are attractively presented and well maintained.

The concept behind Food Basics is to restore the convenience and comfortable ambience of the traditional neighborhood food market, but with low prices.

"We're as clear as can be about our pricing, with our signage and with special surprises like tripling the difference on selected items every day," said Wiseman. "The fact that it doesn't look and feel like a warehouse, or force customers to buy quantities they don't need in order to save a lot of money, is what makes it really special, and a place shoppers are happy to visit once a week or more."

The store's hours are 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

A&P operates 407 stores in 10 states under the A&P, Waldbaum's, The Food Emporium, Super Foodmart, SuperFresh, Farmer Jack, Sav-A-Center, and Food Basics banners. The supermarket is currently in the midst of rolling out its newest versions of its perishables-heavy, gourmet, and discount formats.
