Ahold USA Offers Only Sustainably Sourced Fresh Seafood

All of the seafood sold at the service counters of Ahold USA retail divisions Stop & Shop New England, Stop & Shop New York Metro, Giant Landover and Giant Carlisle is now 100 percent sustainably and responsibly sourced.

Additionally, all of the grocer’s Nature’s Promise and Own Brand seafood products are also sustainably sourced, among them frozen shrimp and canned tuna. Shoppers will be able to choose from more than 200 sustainable seafood options at Ahold USA stores.

“Sustainable seafood is the right consumer choice and is also better for the health of the aquatic ecosystems that produce it,” said Marissa Nelson, SVP of responsible retailing and healthy living at Carlisle, Pa.-based Ahold USA. “We work with seafood suppliers who share our same values of respect for the environment and responsible product sourcing. By supporting these environmentally responsible fisheries and fish farms, our division stores provide high-quality seafood that is not only good for our customers, but ensure the same quality seafood will be available for years to come.”

In keeping with its commitment to sustainably sourced seafood, Ahold USA has created a seafood-purchasing standard in accordance with leading industry practices and certifications. The grocer’s program ensures that seafood has been farmed or fished in an environmentally responsible way meeting strict criteria. As part of the initiative, comprehensive training further teaches retail division associates about responsible sourcing and sustainable seafood, including species-specific origin and sustainability criteria.

Part of Amsterdam-based international food retailer Ahold, the banners of Ahold USA operate about 790 supermarkets with 115,000 associates in 14 states and the District of Columbia, along with e-grocer Peapod.
