AG New England Moves Operations to New Distribution Center

PEMBROKE, N.H. -- Associated Grocers of New England, Inc. said yesterday it is moving its operations to a newly completed, state-of-the-art, 350,000-square-foot wholesale grocery distribution center here.

"Starting next week, all deliveries, all receiving, and all shipping will come out of the new facility," AG New England spokesman Warren Mann told Progressive Grocer.

The new 10,956,120 cubic foot distribution center is more than double the size of the former facility, in Manchester, N.H. According to AG New England's president and c.e.o. Mike Bourgoine, the new plant "incorporates the latest technologies and systems in the food distribution industry. In addition to over two-and-a-half million cubic feet of grocery storage space, the facility includes specialized, climate-controlled areas for the receiving, handling, storage, and shipping of perishable and frozen foods. The refrigerated space alone is 6,638,000 cubic feet with a cooling capacity of over thirteen million BTUs."

Referring to AG New England's status as a cooperative owned entirely by independent retail grocers, Bourgoine continued: "We are in an age of internationally owned, big box store retailing, yet many of today's consumers still prefer to shop in a community supermarket or neighborhood food store where they enjoy a more personalized shopping experience. This impressive new facility is proof positive that the independent retail grocer still serves the needs of many of today's consumers."

The largest retailer-owned wholesale grocery distribution center in New England, AG New England serves independent retail food stores in Maine, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, and the upstate New York/Albany area. The company has a workforce of more than 300.
