Weis Markets Opens New Superstore

SUNBURY, Pa. - Weis Markets opened a new-design 53,712-square-foot superstore Saturday in Honeygo Village Center in White Marsh, Md.

"We are extremely pleased to be part of the innovative Honeygo Village Center," said Weis Markets vice-chairman Jonathan Weis in a statement. "Our new store concept combines an innovative design with product-forward functionality and offers a strong combination of convenience, value, and quality. In addition, the new store decor has a softer edge and more ambiance to it. Our new superstore offers strong perishable departments, a center store with compelling variety, and a customer-friendly checkout with four self-scan lanes."

As part of the grand opening celebration, Weis Markets made separate $1,000 donations to the White Marsh Volunteer Co. and the White Marsh Police Department.

The new store's features include a full-service delicatessen with a brick oven pizza operation, a made-to-order hoagie and sandwich station, a sit-down dining area, a sushi station, an olive bar, and home meal solutions; an organic and natural food grocery section; a full-service pharmacy with a private consultation area; and a service seafood case.

Weis director of public relations Dennis Curtin told Progressive Grocer: "This is the first of our new protoype stores. We will open a larger version in Bloomsburg, Pa. -- a 61,300-square-foot replacement unit -- in the fall and have just begun work on units in Ranson, W.Va. and a replacement in Mifflinburg, Pa. [that's] 44,200 square feet."

With the opening of the White Marsh location, Weis Markets now operates 158 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, and West Virginia.
