Wegmans Supporting Effort to Sell Beer and Wine in All of Its N.J. Stores

Wegmans is joining with other food retailers, including Whole Foods, Acme, and Safeway, to back a bill introduced into the New Jersey State Legislature that would remove the two-liquor-license-limit currently allowed food stores in that state.

"We'd like to make the experience of shopping at Wegmans even better, and certainly more convenient, by selling wine and beer in all of our New Jersey stores," Wegmans explained in a Fresh News e-mail to shoppers.

Noting that there's some opposition to the bill from smaller independent liquor stores, Wegmans encouraged customers to "let [their voices] be heard" by going to www.onestopshopnj.com, where they can send e-mails to their state representatives in support of the law change. The site provides a "take action" tab to allow people to send their e-mails conveniently.

The original law was passed in the post-Prohibition era, as a way to prevent such issues as price fixing and monopolization of the marketplace, and its opponents believe it to be outdated.
