Wegmans' Scholarship Program Marks 25-year Point

This year Wegmans Market is marking the 25th year of a scholarship program by awarding 1,332 employees scholarships totaling $5.6 million for the 2008/2009 academic year.

"Wegmans Scholarships are one of the proudest traditions of our company," said Wegmans president Colleen Wegman. "Many studies have shown that higher education has positive ripple effects that benefit the whole community, so we think this has been a very good way to make a difference."

Eligible employees must work a minimum number of hours over a specified time period while maintaining a high academic standard and good work record. Part-time employees receive up to $1,500 a year for four years, while full-timers get up to $2,200 a year for four years.

Rochester, N.Y.-based Wegmans operates 71 stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, and Maryland.
