Wegmans Nets 41K Toys in Holiday Collection

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. here said that customers at its 61 New York and Pennsylvania stores contributed over 41,000 toys valued at more than $500,000 to local organizations that then distributed the donations to needy children during the holiday season.

Last year marked the 20th anniversary of the retailer's holiday toy collection program in partnership with area not-for-profit groups. Said Wegmans community relations manager Linda Lovejoy in a statement: "One of our values as a company is to make a difference in the communities we serve. This program exemplifies our customers' generosity and truly 'makes a difference' in many lives.

"The reason we're able to collect so many toys is due in large part to our store employees," Lovejoy added. "They put a lot of effort into building creative displays that encourage both customers and employees to give generously."

Family-owned Wegmans operates 71 stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, and Maryland.
