Wegmans' 2006 Check Out Hunger Campaign Raises Over $1 Million
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Wegmans' said that its annual Check Out Hunger campaign, which ended Feb. 28, raised $1,079,067 through customer and employee contributions toward local hunger relief efforts.
Wegmans stores in New York, western Pennsylvania, and Hunt Valley, Md., took part in the campaign. All proceeds will go directly to local food banks in each of Wegmans' marketing areas, the company said. The grocer's stores in eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Virginia run their campaigns in the autumn, and thus are not included in winter results. In the fall campaign, those stores campaign raised $122,680 for food banks in their respective areas.
Wegmans has participated in Check Out Hunger and other hunger relief programs since 1993, raising more than $7 million to date for emergency food services.
"We weren't sure how the campaign would go this year because of the additional check out donation programs we ran for the tsunami and Katrina relief in 2005," noted Linda Lovejoy, community relations manager. "But once again our customers and employees rose to the occasion, exceeding our expectations."
Wegmans also said it contributes about 14 million pounds of food each year to local food banks.
