Wal-Mart Worker Wins $1 Million, Job Offer at Bashas'

CHANDLER, Ariz. - Local shopper Nell Ann Massion won $1 million in the Bashas' Supermarket summer sweepstakes late last week, which would normally be the occasion for a brief photo op in the area press, except for one thing: The Green Valley, Ariz. resident just happens to be an employee of Bashas' arch-rival, Wal-Mart.

Bashas' chairman and c.e.o. Eddie Basha has been an outspoken critic of the way the Bentonville, Ark.-based retailer operates, specifically its allocation of health insurance to its workers and its tendency to drive smaller competitors out of business. So perhaps it's no surprise that when Massion received a $1 million check from Bashas' s.v.p. of real estate and vice chairman Johnny Basha, she also got something else from the company -- a job offer.

Massion told the Arizona Republic that her intention is to keep working in the wake of her windfall, but she remained mum on whether she would move to Bashas'. According to Massion, the money is earmarked for dental work and her retirement.
