Wal-Mart Stores Dips to No. 2 on the Fortune 500

NEW YORK -- Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart Stores slipped one spot to No. 2 on this year's Fortune 500 list, edged out of the top spot by Exxon Mobil on Fortune magazine's annual ranking of America's largest corporations by revenue.

Wal-Mart rang up $315.654 billion in revenues in 2005, up 9.6 percent from the previous year, according to Forbes, which published the list in its April 17 issue. Wal-Mart's 2005 profits were $11.231 billion, up 9.4 percent from a year earlier.

Other supermarket-related companies that made the list were:

-- Kroger Co.: No. 21 with $60.552 billion in revenues, $958 million in estimated profits
-- Costco Wholesale Corp.: No. 28 with $52.935 billion in revenues, $1.063 billion in profits
-- Target Corp.: No. 29 with $52.620 billion in revenues, $2.408 billion in profits
-- Albertsons: No. 47 with $40.397 billion in revenues, $446 million in profits
-- Safeway: No. 50 with $38.416 billion in revenues, $561 million in profits
-- Publix Supermarkets: No. 104 with $20.744.8 billion in revenues, $989.2 million in profits
-- Supervalu: No. 113 with $19.543 billion in revenues, $385.8 million in profits
-- Winn-Dixie Stores: No. 231 with $10.209 billion in revenues, $832.6 million in losses
-- Dollar General: No. 268 with $8.582 billion in revenues, $350.2 million in profits
-- Family Dollar Stores: No. 369 with $5.824 billion in revenues, $217.5 million in profits
-- Whole Foods Market: No. 449 with $4.701 billion in revenues, $136.4 million in profits
-- Nash Finch: No. 457 with $4.555 billion in revenues, $41.3 million in profits
-- Pathmark Stores: No. 497 with $3,980 billion in revenues, $327.1 in lossses.
