Wal-Mart September Sales Rise 2.4 Percent

BENTONVILLE, Ark. - Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said sales at stores open at least a year rose 2.4 percent in September, slightly higher than its preliminary report but still toward the low end of its forecast range.

The company also said it expects October same-store sales to rise 2 percent to 4 percent. Sales of bedding, software, DVDs, music, food and pet supplies were above average in September, according to the world’s largest retailer, which said last Saturday that its preliminary count showed sales up 2.3 percent in the five weeks ended Oct. 1. It had forecast a rise of 2 percent to 4 percent while analysts' average forecast was 2.6 percent, according to Reuters Estimates.

Wal-Mart's total September sales rose 10.8 percent to $25.74 billion while same-store sales rose 2 percent at its namesake division and 4.5 percent at its Sam's Club warehouse stores.
