Wal-Mart Investigated for Waste Transport Violations

BENTONVILLE, Ark. -- Wal-Mart Stores here disclosed in a filing with the Securities Exchange Commission that it is the target of a criminal investigation by the U.S. Attorney in Los Angeles, into the transportation of hazardous waste between its stores in California and its return center in Las Vegas.

The Dow Jones news wire reported this morning that Wal-Mart said the U.S. Attorney contends the use of Wal-Mart trucks to transport certain materials from its stores to its return centers is prohibited by the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act because those materials may be considered hazardous waste.

The government said that Wal-Mart must ship certain materials classified as "hazardous waste" directly from the stores to a certified disposal facility using a certified hazardous waste carrier, the company said in the filing.
