Wakefern Adds Kronos Technology To Enhance Store-level Support

CHICAGO -- Wakefern Food Corp., the marketing and distribution arm for ShopRite supermarkets, has implemented Kronos Inc.'s Workforce Central suite to help balance its labor law compliance and cost control objectives while simultaneously maintaining high service levels.

Wakefern selected Kronos as the first part of an overall initiative to centralize and standardize store applications to meet the needs of its business, customers, and employees.

"Our cooperative is comprised of 43 members, 225 stores, and more than 47,000 employees," said Natan Tabak, Wakefern's s.v.p. and c.i.o. "We needed a scalable solution that was easy to implement and requires minimal support. Kronos offers the whole package, from its market leadership and longstanding tradition of providing excellent service, to its rapid implementation and rollout methodology. All of these strengths mean our company will be enjoying the benefits of Kronos very quickly."

A significant benefit to Wakefern is Kronos' scheduling functionality that enables strict compliance to minor age work regulations, which restrict minors to a maximum number of hours/shifts per week and regulates earliest-start and latest-end times, all of which vary by state and age of minor employee.

The Kronos rules engine manages multiple school calendars to ensure that minor-age employees are not scheduled in violation of these minor employee rules.

"Minimizing exposure to minor-age compliance issues is extremely important for grocers such as Wakefern," said John Anderson, retail industry director at Kronos.

The Wakefern grocery cooperative is comprised of 43 members who individually own and operate supermarkets under the ShopRite banner throughout New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Delaware.
